VGC 2018 Mega-Evolution Tier List

Updated: Jul 31, 2018

Hi, I'm Connor and I'm NOT MOXIE Boosted

You may remember me from such videos as this and such "brilliant" YouTube channels as this

Here is a tier list I created to display the Mega-Evolutions that are legal to be used in the current, VGC 2018, format. These are based mostly on personal opinion, but other factors were used to form the tiers; these will be explained later.

How I chose the tiers?

Besides my opinion, I went through a process of deciding how I put each Pokémon into their respective tiers. Here are a couple ways I concluded my variables.

  • Usage on Battlespot/Showdown

  • Usage at TPCi run events (Regionals, Internats, MSS etc.)

  • Total CP earned

  • Viability

  • Strength and bulk against Tapus

  • Strength against the Battlespot top 30 and Showdown top 100 Pokémon

  • Weaknesses and Resistances/Immunity

Reasoning behind certain tier placements

Some Pokémon look a bit out of place in their tiers. This is where my opinion mostly came in to fruition. I will try to explain my reasons as best as I can

  • Kangaskahn moved down to A because of the nerf to a 25% boost.

  • Salamence moved into A due to Aerialate nerf and it's 4x weak to Ice-Type.

  • Tyranitar moved into B due to a 4x weakness to Fighting-Type and 2x weak to Fairy-Type.

  • Gardevoir moved down to B because of nerf to Pixilate.

  • Blaziken moved up to C+ tier because of the common and strong Bisharp + Blaziken core.

  • Latias moved up into C+ tier because of a jump in usage this year.

  • Swampert and Scizor placed in C- because of 4x weaknesses and they rely on rain.

  • Gyarados moved into C- tier due to increase in Fairy and Fighting Pokémon and coverage.

  • Camerupt moved from C to D because of a 4x weakness to Water-Type and a low Speed.

  • Lopunny moved up to D tier because it counters Kangaskhan really well.

  • Aerodactyl moved up to D tier due top cutting the Hong Kong and Taiwan regionals.

  • Abomasnow moved up to D tier due to strength against Landorus and in the weather wars.

  • Steelix in D tier due the the rise in popularity after Wolfe Glick piloted it to a regionals win.

  • Sceptile, Glalie and Aggron bumped up to E because they counter common Pokémon.

  • Slowbro gained some CP in high level events and has some niche tactics, placing it in E.

  • Everything in F has a high chance to be OHKOd or 2HKOd by common Pokémon

  • Beedrill can grab KOs on a lot of Pokémon weak to it's STAB attacks thanks to Adaptability

  • Medicham has Fake Out and Huge Power. Also has access to Ice Punch for Landorus.

  • Audino can be bulky, but with Calm Mind and healing it can stall and deal damage.

  • Alakazam is ONE FAST BOI!... but it's also as fragile as a sheet of wafer thin glass.

  • Banette hates Tapu Fini and Tapu Lele because they block Prankster and status affects.

  • Sableye has no use with little to no status or hazard moves; only weakness is Fairy-Types.

  • Sharpedo and Pidgeot get placed lower than usual because Tapu Koko is a thing 😝.

  • Gallade has its usage and has a small amount of 2018 CP, but it dies to common coverage.

And there you have it! Of course, as I stated, this is just my opinion and anyone can have their say on what they think, and offer varying opinions. Just be nice about it.

I'm done, Connor signing out...
